Privacy Policy
Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information SciHive collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and what rights you have. This policy applies to all visitors of scihive.vercel.app (the “Site”). Last updated: May 30, 2026.
1. Information we collect
We collect two types of information: (a) Information collected automatically — when you visit the Site, our analytics services may collect your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, time spent on pages, and device identifiers. This data is collected through cookies and similar technologies. (b) Information you provide — if you contact us via email, submit a story tip, or subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the information you voluntarily provide, such as your name and email address.
2. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to: operate and improve the Site; analyze traffic patterns and reader engagement to improve our editorial content; respond to inquiries and correspondence; send newsletters if you have opted in; detect and prevent security threats or abuse. We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we never will.
3. Analytics & third-party services
SciHive uses Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand how readers use the Site. These services collect anonymized performance and usage data. We do not use Google Analytics or Facebook Pixel. Images in articles may be loaded from third-party sources such as Pexels, Wikimedia Commons, and YouTube, which may set their own cookies. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these services.
4. Cookies
The Site uses a small number of cookies for essential functionality and analytics. Essential cookies are required for the Site to function properly, such as maintaining your browsing session. Analytics cookies help us understand aggregate usage patterns. You can manage or disable cookies through your browser settings at any time. For more details, see our Cookie Notice page.
5. Data retention
We retain automatically collected analytics data for up to 24 months. Contact information provided via email is retained for as long as necessary to respond to your inquiry, or until you request deletion. Newsletter subscriber data is retained until you unsubscribe.
6. Your rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Depending on your location, you may have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; request correction or deletion of your data; object to or restrict processing of your data; request data portability; withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@scihive.net. We will respond within 30 days. If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what personal information is collected and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information (note: we do not sell personal information).
7. Children's privacy
The Site is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately at privacy@scihive.net and we will delete it.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the 'Last updated' date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the Site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For significant changes, we will provide prominent notice on the Site.
